Hyderabad: Women’s safety continues to be a pressing concern, but a young innovator has come up with a promising solution. B. Sarthak, a Class 8 student from Adilabad, Telangana, has created a device called the Girl Safety Device. He developed this idea with the guidance of his physics teacher and mentor, Vaibhav Deshmukh. The device aims to help women protect themselves in emergencies like eve-teasing or assault.

Sarthak was inspired to create the device after witnessing a young girl in his area struggle to defend herself. Determined to address the issue, he designed a practical and effective solution. The Girl Safety Device, which is still in its prototype stage, has already received recognition. It was shortlisted in the Telangana State Innovation Cell’s (TSIC) Intinta Innovator Programme last year, earning praise from many.

The device is lightweight and designed to be discreet. It can be integrated into footwear such as slippers or shoes. It includes a battery, a booster, and two terminals. One terminal is attached to the wearer’s leg, while the other is placed beneath the footwear.

In an emergency, the device can be activated to emit a loud distress siren. Additionally, it delivers an electric shock to anyone who touches the wearer, forcing the attacker to retreat. This innovative self-defense mechanism allows women to protect themselves without relying on external help.

According to mentor Vaibhav Deshmukh, the device is both easy to use and comfortable to wear daily. “Once activated, it can help deter attackers and prevent many unfortunate incidents,” he said. The team is also in discussions with shoe companies to integrate the technology into everyday footwear, making it convenient and accessible for women.

This invention demonstrates the potential of young minds to solve real-world problems. With further development and commercialization, the Girl Safety Device could become a crucial tool for improving women’s safety.

Sarthak’s story is an inspiring example of how creativity and determination can lead to meaningful solutions for societal challenges, paving the way for a safer future for everyone.
