The Telangana government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, has decided to facilitate the construction of Indiramma houses in urban areas, revealed the State Revenue, Housing, and Urban Affairs Minister, Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy. The decision comes in the backdrop of the rapid construction of Indiramma houses in rural areas.
The government aims to provide permanent housing to the urban poor, following the path of Indiramma. The state government will allow the construction of G+1 (Ground plus one) type houses in an area of at least 30 square meters, stated Minister Srinivas Reddy. He added that the ground floor would have 200 square feet and the first floor would add another 200 square feet.
“We are focusing on providing permanent housing to the poor in urban areas too, just like we are doing in rural areas. Even though there is a shortage of space in urban areas, we are providing opportunities to construct G+1 type of houses. This will be a major boost for the urban poor who are currently living in temporary arrangements,” said Srinivas Reddy.
According to the Minister, the government will provide financial assistance of Rs. 5 lakhs in four stages, depending upon the construction progress. He clarified that the state government is the only one in the country to spend such a significant amount for housing of the poor.
Officials have been instructed to focus on the construction of Indiramma houses in urban areas. “If the construction of Indiramma houses in rural areas is one step, the construction in urban areas is another. We are taking this as a challenge and focusing majorly on this,” said the Minister.
Notably, the Indiramma housing scheme has been a flagship program of the Telangana government, aimed at providing affordable housing to the poor. The extension of this scheme to urban areas is expected to benefit a significant number of urban poor, who currently lack permanent housing.
