The Telangana Police have released an official statement clarifying details about Sajid Akram, an alleged terrorist and shooter originally from Hyderabad, India, who migrated to Australia nearly three decades ago.
According to the statement, Sajid Akram completed his B.Com degree in Hyderabad before leaving India in November 1998, approximately 27 years ago, in search of employment opportunities abroad.
After arriving in Australia, he married Ms. Venera Grosso, a woman of European origin, and settled permanently in the country. The couple has two children: a son named Naveed, who is identified as one of the two attackers, and a daughter. While Sajid Akram continues to hold an Indian passport, both his son Naveed Akram and daughter were born in Australia and are Australian citizens.
Information gathered from his relatives in India reveals that Sajid Akram maintained limited contact with his family in Hyderabad over the past 27 years. He visited India on six occasions after his migration, primarily for family-related matters including property issues and visits to his elderly parents. Notably, it is understood that he did not return to India even at the time of his father’s death.
The family members in Hyderabad have stated they had no knowledge of his radical mindset or activities. They also expressed ignorance about the circumstances that led to his radicalization. The statement emphasizes that the factors contributing to the radicalization of Sajid Akram and his son Naveed appear to have no connection with India or any local influence in Telangana.
The Telangana Police and the office of Telangana DGP have confirmed that there is no adverse record against Sajid Akram during his stay in India prior to his departure in 1998. The police department has maintained that his activities before migration were not flagged for any security concerns.
In their official statement, the Telangana Police emphasized their commitment to cooperating with central agencies and other counterparts as and when required in any investigation related to this matter.
The police department has also issued a public appeal urging both the public and media not to engage in speculation regarding the case. The statement serves to clarify the facts surrounding Sajid Akram’s background and his limited connection to his place of origin over the past nearly three decades.
