The Telangana government has increased the prices of liquor starting from May 19, 2025. According to a notice from the Excise Department, the price of alcohol will now be higher for certain brands.

Prices have gone up by ₹10 for a quarter bottle, ₹20 for a half bottle, and ₹40 for a full bottle. This change affects only selected liquor labels, not all.

Along with this price hike, the government has also brought back the Special Excise Cess. This tax was first introduced in 2020, removed in 2023, and is now being reimposed on specific types of liquor.

Earlier in February 2025, the state had already increased beer prices by 15%. This latest move follows suggestions from a liquor pricing panel led by retired judge Jaiswal. The three-member committee reviewed pricing and submitted a report, which led to the decision.

The government seems to be taking a step-by-step approach to boost revenue. First, beer prices went up before summer, likely to benefit from high demand during the hot months. Now, with the monsoon around the corner, the focus has shifted to liquor.

Officials estimate that this new pricing structure could bring in an extra ₹500 crore per month for the state. This move is expected to significantly increase Telangana's revenue from alcohol sales through the year.
