The Students Federation of India (SFI) has announced a state-wide school bandh in Telangana on November 30, 2024. This protest is in response to recent food poisoning incidents in government schools, which have raised concerns about the safety of meals served to students. The SFI is demanding immediate action from the Telangana government to address the issue. Their demands include the appointment of a new Education Minister and stricter food safety protocols in government schools, hostels, and gurukuls. In response to these incidents, the Telangana government has already initiated several measures. A Food Safety Committee has been established to inspect food items served at government schools, gurukuls, and Anganwadis across the state. Additionally, a special committee has been formed to oversee food safety in welfare hostels, led by the Food Safety Commissioner, Additional Directors, and District Collectors.
To further strengthen food safety, individual Food Safety Committees will now be set up in schools. These committees will inspect food storage areas and kitchens before meals are prepared or served to students. These steps aim to prevent future food poisoning incidents and ensure that students receive safe and healthy meals.
However, the SFI has stated that their protests will continue until the government takes concrete steps to guarantee food safety in all government-run educational institutions. As part of the bandh, schools across Telangana will remain closed on November 30.
