Telangana has made significant progress in its road network and building construction over the last eight years. The state government has undertaken four major programs to improve infrastructure, including providing double lane connectivity between mandal and district headquarters, widening major district roads and state highways, constructing bridges, and forming ring roads and bypasses to major towns.
At the time of Telangana’s formation, the status of its road network was below the national average. Only 28% of the state’s 24,245 km road length was double/four-lane/multi-lane, and the quality of the roads was subpar. Recognizing that a better road network is crucial for economic progress, the government focused on improving road connectivity in both national highways and state roads. As a result, the national highway density has increased from 2.25 km/100 sqkm in 2014 to 4.45 km/100 sq km in 2023.
Over the past eight years, Telangana has made significant strides in improving its road network. Double lane roads have increased from 6,093 km in 2014 to 12,060 km, while four-lane and above roads have increased from 669 km to 1,154 km. The government has also implemented a novel idea of constructing bridge-cum-check dams to store water upstream and increase groundwater. Of the 184 bridges-cum-check dams taken up, 141 have been completed. This approach has reduced construction costs by 45-50% compared to building check dams.
In addition to improving its road network, Telangana has also focused on building infrastructure. Total building infrastructure in the state has increased from 30.43 lakh sft before 2014 to 132.45 lakh sft. Public buildings have increased from 11.73 lakh sft to 71.55 lakh sft, while residential buildings have increased from 18.70 lakh sft to 60.90 lakh sft.
The state government has undertaken several major building projects, including the BR Ambedkar State Secretariat, Telangana Martyrs Memorial, 125-foot tall Ambedkar statue, integrated district offices complexes, residential complexes for district officials in office complexes, and an integrated command control center. These projects have helped Telangana emerge as a favorite destination for people across the country and around the world.
