Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) is worried about the end of the Rs 5 lakh Accident Insurance Scheme. This scheme was important for auto drivers, Home Guards, and journalists in Telangana. It started in 2015 and ended on October 8, 2024, affecting over 13.11 lakh people who now lack coverage.
Shaik Salauddin, the union’s Founder President, pointed out that 454 claims totaling Rs 22.7 crore from the years 2019 to 2024 are still unresolved. This issue shows major communication gaps between the Labour Department, Transport Department, and insurance companies.
Because of these delays and issues, many workers and their families face serious risks, going against the state’s promise to support worker welfare.
The union urges the Government of Telangana to act quickly. They suggest moving scheme management to the Transport Department for better efficiency, raising insurance coverage to Rs 10 lakh, and including benefits for accidental disability and hospitalization. The union also calls for continuous policy renewal to avoid future coverage gaps and for awareness campaigns to inform people about the scheme and how to claim.
This appeal seeks fairness for those who ensure our cities run smoothly—drivers, Home Guards, and journalists. The union asks the Chief Minister and Labour Department to take immediate and strong steps to restore and enhance this essential scheme.
