Hyderabad: A serious incident occurred in Sanathnagar on Tuesday when part of a pedestrian staircase next to the Fatehnagar flyover collapsed. Two people were seriously hurt as they were using the old structure, which is more than 30 years old and already damaged. They were quickly taken to a nearby hospital for medical care.
The Sanathnagar police arrived at the scene and suggested that recent rain might have weakened the staircase. Water absorption could have played a role in the collapse.
Upon receiving the news, GHMC officials arrived to investigate the incident. They are checking the safety of similar structures in the area. HYDRA Commissioner AV Ranganath inspected the site and declared the staircase dangerous. He instructed the immediate dismantling of the structure and called for a city-wide inspection of aging infrastructure by civil engineering experts to prevent future incidents. The HYDRA team demolished the staircase. Fatehnagar Corporator Satish Goud assured that new stairs would be built. Local residents noted that the staircase is particularly busy on Sundays due to the weekly Sanathnagar market.
