Hyderabad: The Cyberabad traffic police conducted a major crackdown on drunk driving over the weekend. During late-night checks at various locations, they caught 247 people driving under the influence of alcohol. In a similar drive, Hyderabad police reported 828 drunk driving cases in just one week.
Out of the 247 caught in the Cyberabad area, 189 were riding two-wheelers, 13 were driving three-wheelers, 44 were in cars, and one was driving a heavy vehicle. Police noted that 23 drivers had extremely high blood alcohol levels, ranging between 200 and 550 mg/100 ml. All of the offenders will be taken to court. The most cases came from Balanagar with 31, Chevella with 28, Jeedimetla with 24, RC Puram with 23, and Shadnagar with 21.
Between April 5 and 11, Hyderabad police also carried out a special drive. Among the 828 caught, 697 were two-wheeler riders, 41 were in three-wheelers, 87 were car drivers, and 3 were heavy vehicle drivers. Police found that 43 people had very high alcohol levels in their blood. They also caught two minors driving drunk, and 23 offenders were aged between 18 and 20.
Most of the drunk drivers were between 21 and 33 years old, with 349 offenders in this age group. Another 259 were aged between 31 and 40. There were 145 offenders between 41 and 50 years old. The police found both underage drinking and drunk driving during this drive. While the traffic police booked them for drunk driving, the law and order police will investigate where the minors got the alcohol.
Police warned that anyone caught drunk driving and causing a fatal accident will be arrested and charged under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. This charge, for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, can lead to up to 10 years in jail and a fine.
