    Hyderabad, February 20, 2024: In a bid to tackle the perennial issue of traffic congestion, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has taken a significant step by inviting tenders for Expression of Interest (EOI) for consultancy services aimed at preparing Feasibility Studies (FS) and Detailed Project Reports (DPR) for the development of road tunnels. These tunnels, to be constructed using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM), are planned to span across five crucial corridors within the city.

    The proposed corridors for the development of road tunnels are strategically selected to address key traffic bottlenecks and streamline vehicular movement across Hyderabad. The corridors earmarked for tunnel development are as follows:

    1. ITC Kohinoor to Wipro Circle via Khajaguda and Nanakramguda: This route aims to facilitate smoother connectivity between these prominent locations, which are currently plagued by heavy traffic during peak hours.
    2. ITC Kohinoor to JNTU via Mindspace: Enhancing accessibility between ITC Kohinoor and JNTU via Mindspace will not only ease traffic congestion but also improve connectivity for commuters.
    3. ITC Kohinoor to Banjara Hills Rd No. 10 via Jubilee Hills Rd No. 45: By linking these bustling areas, the proposed tunnel aims to alleviate congestion on major thoroughfares, enhancing the overall traffic flow in the vicinity.
    4. GVK1 Mall to Nanalnagar via Masab Tank: This corridor addresses the congestion issues prevalent in the vicinity of GVK1 Mall and Masab Tank, providing a seamless route to Nanalnagar.
    5. Nampally to Chandrayangutta IRR via Charminar and Falaknuma: Connecting Nampally to Chandrayangutta via Charminar and Falaknuma will significantly reduce travel time and congestion along this critical route.

    Speaking about the project, a GHMC spokesperson emphasized the importance of proactive measures to address traffic congestion, stating, “The development of road tunnels in these corridors is a proactive step towards easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity across Hyderabad. By leveraging advanced tunneling technology, we aim to create efficient transportation networks that cater to the evolving needs of our city.”

    The announcement has been met with enthusiasm from residents and commuters who have long grappled with the challenges posed by traffic congestion. Many are optimistic about the potential of road tunnels to transform their daily commute experience and enhance overall urban mobility.
