Hyderabad: AIMIM President and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has urged Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to immediately halt the proposed relocation of the Gudimalkapur Vegetable and Flower Market to Aziznagar in Ranga Reddy district, stating that the move could adversely affect the livelihoods of nearly 10,000 families dependent on the market.
In a post on social media platform X, Owaisi said the wholesale market has been serving residents of South and West Hyderabad for decades and questioned the need for shifting it. He also alleged that the proposal violates the provisions of the Telangana (Agricultural Produce and Livestock) Markets Act, 1966, and appealed to the government to reconsider the decision.
Government’s Proposal
The Telangana Government is planning to develop a new Integrated Vegetable, Fruit and Flower Market at Aziznagar, Moinabad Mandal, on around 150 acres of government land. The proposed market is expected to provide modern infrastructure, wider internal roads, dedicated loading and unloading bays, cold storage facilities, parking spaces and better logistics for farmers and traders. The land identification and acquisition process has already been initiated by the district administration, while the project awaits final government approval. Why the Market Is Being Shifted
Officials believe the existing Gudimalkapur Market, located near Mehdipatnam, has become heavily congested due to rapid urbanisation. Narrow approach roads, traffic congestion and limited space have made it increasingly difficult to handle the growing volume of wholesale vegetable, fruit and flower trade. The proposed integrated market at Aziznagar is intended to address these challenges by providing a larger and more organised trading hub.
Owaisi Raises Concerns
Opposing the proposal, Owaisi said the market caters to thousands of traders, labourers, transport workers and small businesses in South and West Hyderabad. He argued that relocating the market would disrupt their livelihoods and make wholesale trading less accessible for many vendors.
The Hyderabad MP also noted that the wholesale vegetable market was earlier shifted from Karwan to Gudimalkapur in 1991 to ease congestion, and questioned why another relocation is now being considered. He further pointed out that several government offices have already been shifted away from South and West Hyderabad in recent years, saying another major relocation would send the wrong message to residents of the region.
A Historic Wholesale Market
The Gudimalkapur Market is one of Hyderabad’s oldest wholesale agricultural markets. The vegetable market was shifted from Karwan to Gudimalkapur in 1991, while the city’s wholesale flower market was relocated from Jambagh (Moazzam Jahi Market) to Gudimalkapur in 2009. Today, it is among Hyderabad’s busiest wholesale markets, supplying vegetables and flowers to retailers across the city and neighbouring districts.
Final Decision Awaited
The Telangana Government has not yet announced a final decision on the relocation. If approved, the Aziznagar integrated market is expected to become one of the largest wholesale agricultural trading hubs in the Hyderabad metropolitan region. Meanwhile, traders and market associations are expected to continue discussions with the government over the future of the Gudimalkapur market.
