Hyderabad’s new metro project, Phase II of the Airport Metro, is set to become a reality soon. To move forward, Hyderabad Metro Rail authorities are finalizing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this proposed metro expansion. They are also working on solutions to address potential obstacles, especially in areas like LB Nagar, Bairamalguda Road, Owaisi Hospital, and Chandrayangutta.

Metro officials have been busy with inspections and review meetings. They are getting close to completing the DPR, which is expected to be finalized in a few weeks. Once it receives approval from the state government, it will be sent to the central government for necessary permissions, and then construction can begin. This project is a joint venture between the Central Government and Telangana Government. The funding plan includes 15% from the Centre, 35% from the State, 45% from international funding agencies, and the remaining 5% from public-private partnerships.

The Metro Phase II corridor will cover 70 km and aims to connect Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad with the city’s four corners. This will help improve first and last mile connectivity. Part of the plan includes extending the 5.5-km MGBS-Falaknuma route in the Old City by another 2 km and constructing an interchange station at Chandrayangutta.

A significant engineering challenge is the design of the stations and the need to navigate existing flyovers in areas like LB Nagar, Bairamalguda Road, Owaisi Hospital, and Chandrayangutta. The final report will guide decisions on station designs, and appropriate measures will be taken to overcome these challenges.
