The All India 7th Prison Duty Meet concluded with success in Hyderabad, highlighting correctional reform and unity among states. This three-day event was organized by the Telangana Prisons Department and the Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D). It gathered prison officials from across India to compete and exchange ideas.
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar attended the closing ceremony as the Chief Guest. He praised the initiative’s focus on rehabilitating inmates. “Effective prison management is crucial for helping prisoners rejoin society with dignity,” he stated.
The Minister noted that India has 1,330 prisons with about 5.73 lakh inmates and stressed the importance of compassionate management. He commended the Telangana Prisons Department for organizing competitions in areas like cleanliness, education, and arts, which aid rehabilitation.
State Minister for Revenue & Information Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy also praised the event, emphasizing that prisons should focus on transformation, not just punishment. He encouraged other states to follow Telangana’s example.
Attendees included senior officials like BPR&D Director General Alok Ranjan and Telangana Prisons DG Dr. Soumya Mishra, along with representatives from various regions.
The meet featured 22 competitions, such as quizzes, unarmed combat, and fine arts. Sports events like basketball and athletics highlighted the value of fitness in prisons.
A total of 26 trophies and 40 medals were awarded, with Telangana winning 17 trophies. The awards were given by Ministers Bandi Sanjay and Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy.
This meet provided a platform for sharing knowledge and skills among prison staff nationwide. It emphasized the role of prisons as centers for reform and highlighted the importance of collaboration in creating a more humane correctional system.
