Hyderabad: Telangana has taken a significant step towards becoming one of India’s biggest high-speed rail (Bullet Train) destinations. In a major decision, the State Cabinet has approved revised proposals relating to the alignments, station locations and depot infrastructure for the proposed Hyderabad–Pune–Mumbai, Hyderabad–Bengaluru and Hyderabad–Chennai Bullet Train corridors.

The Cabinet has also approved the allocation of nearly 400 acres of land near Shamshabad for the construction of a major high-speed rail station, rolling stock depot and maintenance workshop. The proposal will now be forwarded to the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), which will finalise the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), station locations and final alignments.

The state government has further directed that the final Bullet Train alignments be incorporated into the HMDA Master Plan as well as the proposed Future City Master Plan. Officials have also been instructed to speed up land acquisition, utility shifting and departmental clearances to ensure timely implementation once the projects receive final approval.

512 km of High-Speed Rail to Pass Through Telangana

The Central Government has proposed seven new high-speed rail corridors across India as part of its long-term railway modernisation programme. Out of these, three major corridors will originate from Hyderabad, making Telangana one of the most important states in India’s Bullet Train network.

The combined length of the three corridors across Telangana, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu is expected to be around 2,028 kilometres. Of this, nearly 512 kilometres of high-speed railway track will pass through Telangana.

Officials believe this will significantly improve interstate connectivity while boosting industrial growth, tourism and investment across the state.

Shamshabad to Become the Common Bullet Train Hub

The biggest development is the proposal to establish a common high-speed rail hub at Shamshabad, close to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. Instead of developing separate facilities for each corridor, the government has proposed a single integrated hub that will serve all three Bullet Train routes.

The proposed hub will include:

  • Main High-Speed Rail Station
  • Rolling Stock Depot
  • Maintenance Workshop
  • Operations Control Facilities

The state government has agreed to provide approximately 400 acres for this integrated facility. A smaller rolling stock depot and Operations Control Centre (OCC) have also been proposed near the planned Cyberabad Station.

Three Proposed Bullet Train Corridors

The proposed high-speed rail network from Hyderabad consists of the following corridors:

1. Hyderabad – Pune – Mumbai

This corridor will connect Hyderabad with Maharashtra’s financial capital through western Telangana. The proposed stations are:

  • Hyderabad (Shamshabad)
  • Cyberabad
  • Vikarabad

The DPR for this corridor has reportedly already been submitted to the Railway Board.

2. Hyderabad – Bengaluru

The original proposal routed this corridor through Mahabubnagar and Wanaparthy. However, based on suggestions from the Telangana Government, the alignment has now been modified to support future urban growth.

The revised proposed stations include:

  • Hyderabad (Shamshabad)
  • Bharat Future City
  • Amanagallu
  • Nallamala (formerly Mannanur)
  • Somasila

3. Hyderabad – Chennai

The Hyderabad–Chennai corridor has also undergone major changes. The earlier alignment via Narketpally, Suryapet and Khammam has been revised to better integrate with the proposed Future City development.

The revised proposed stations are:

  • Hyderabad (Shamshabad)
  • Bharat Future City
  • Dry Port
  • Nagarjunasagar (Haliya)
  • Vadapalli

Several Alignment Changes Approved

The Cabinet approved multiple modifications after reviewing a detailed presentation made by Special Chief Secretary Vikas Raj from the Transport and Roads & Buildings Department.

The changes are intended to improve future passenger demand, integrate upcoming urban developments and minimise environmental impact.

Officials also decided that the station originally proposed near Kokapet Neopolis will now be renamed Cyberabad Station. The station location is also expected to shift nearly 500 metres west of the original proposal.

Ananthagiri Tourist Station Retained

To promote tourism in western Telangana, the government has decided to retain the proposed Ananthagiri Station, which will serve visitors travelling to the Ananthagiri Hills near Vikarabad.

The station is expected to improve accessibility to one of Telangana’s most popular eco-tourism destinations.

Mannanur Renamed as Nallamala Station

Another important change approved by the Cabinet is the renaming of the proposed Mannanur Station to Nallamala Station.

The station will be located near the beginning of the proposed elevated high-speed corridor along the Hyderabad–Srisailam National Highway and is expected to serve the Nallamala forest region.

Somasila Station Near Krishna River

Officials have also revised the alignment near Somasila to minimise impact on protected forest areas. The station will be located close to Somasila town and will connect with the proposed iconic bridge across the Krishna River, after which the corridor will enter Andhra Pradesh towards Kurnool.

4.6-km Tunnel Planned Near Vikarabad

One of the most significant engineering features proposed under the project is a 4.6-kilometre tunnel near Vikarabad. The tunnel is expected to help maintain the required design speed while navigating the region’s terrain.

Officials said this would be one of the major engineering structures on the Hyderabad–Pune–Mumbai corridor.

Bullet Trains to Run at Up to 350 km/h

The proposed high-speed corridors are being designed for operating speeds of up to 350 km/h, although the Hyderabad–Pune–Mumbai corridor is expected to have a design speed of around 330 km/h.

Once operational, these trains are expected to reduce travel times between Hyderabad and Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai by several hours.

Metro Connectivity Planned

The government also intends to integrate the Bullet Train stations with the Hyderabad Metro Rail network wherever feasible. This is expected to improve last-mile connectivity for passengers and create a seamless multimodal transport system.

Land Exchange with Railways Proposed

Instead of transferring land free of cost, the Telangana Government has proposed that the Central Government compensate the state either by transferring equivalent railway land elsewhere or by providing funds towards acquisition of the required 400 acres at Shamshabad.

This proposal will be discussed with the Railway Ministry during the next stage of project planning.

Environmental Protection Given Priority

While approving the alignments, the Cabinet emphasised that the environmental impact of the Bullet Train network should be kept to a minimum.

Officials have been instructed to make necessary alignment adjustments to avoid ecologically sensitive areas, minimise damage to forest land and reduce the need for large-scale displacement wherever possible.

Final Approval Yet to Come

Although the Telangana Cabinet has approved the proposed alignments and infrastructure plans, the projects are still subject to technical scrutiny by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL). The corporation will finalise the Detailed Project Reports, exact station locations and the final route before construction can begin.

If implemented as proposed, Hyderabad will emerge as the largest Bullet Train hub in South India, with three major high-speed rail corridors converging at Shamshabad. The project is expected to transform interstate connectivity, strengthen Telangana’s logistics network and support the state’s long-term economic and urban development goals.
