Hyderabad, October 29, 2025 — Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) spokesperson Amjedullah Khan has strongly criticized the recent induction of former cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin into the Telangana Cabinet, calling it a “six-month political stunt” aimed at wooing minority voters ahead of the Jubilee Hills by-election and the upcoming GHMC elections.
Amjedullah Khan alleged that Azharuddin’s appointment was made purely for electoral advantage, claiming it has “nothing to do with governance or public welfare.” He said the move is a calculated attempt by the ruling Congress government to influence minority sentiments in Hyderabad’s politically sensitive constituencies.
Khan further pointed out that Azharuddin was appointed as an MLC under the Governor’s quota, which, by constitutional provisions, is reserved for non-political personalities with exceptional achievements in fields like art, culture, literature, or social service. “This quota was misused for political gain,” he said, adding that a case challenging this MLC nomination is currently pending in the Supreme Court.
According to Khan, since Azharuddin’s ministerial position is based on this disputed MLC nomination, the court could cancel it at any time, making his current tenure as minister “legally fragile and politically motivated.”
“The Congress government knows this ministry cannot last more than six months,” Amjedullah Khan said, “but they went ahead with it only to attract votes before the elections.”
Political observers say Khan’s statement adds fuel to the growing debate over the timing of Azharuddin’s inclusion in the Cabinet. With the Jubilee Hills bypoll fast approaching, parties are intensifying their outreach to key voter groups, and Azharuddin’s elevation is seen as a move to consolidate minority and youth support in urban Hyderabad.
