Mahabubnagar: On Sunday, the BC Samaj honored former Union Minister and respected lawyer P Shiv Shankar on his birth anniversary.
BC Samaj State Secretary, M Srinivas Sagar, praised Shiv Shankar for his significant impact on securing reservations for Backward Classes and promoting social justice. Sagar called him a “pillar of social justice” and credited him with the successful nationwide implementation of BC reservations.
Sagar noted that Shiv Shankar’s legal expertise was crucial in protecting the Mandal Commission report from being overturned in the Supreme Court.
The tribute took place at the BC Samaj’s old district office. Leaders from different caste groups and BC student unions placed garlands on Shiv Shankar’s portrait. Srinivas Sagar emphasized Shiv Shankar’s major achievements, such as introducing the Anti-Defection Law. He highlighted Shiv Shankar’s journey from a challenging childhood to becoming India’s Law Minister, serving as an inspiration for BC communities.
Srinivas Sagar also mentioned Shiv Shankar’s modesty in refusing the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister position and recognized his legal assistance to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during the Emergency, which contributed to her acquittal in several cases.
