Jagtial, April 26: In a heart-wrenching incident, a 29-year-old former software professional died by suicide in Jagtial, allegedly due to continued harassment over dowry by her in-laws. The deceased, identified as Prasanna Lakshmi, was found hanging at her maternal home in Pochammavada locality on Thursday night.

Originally employed in Bengaluru’s IT sector, Lakshmi had resigned from her job after the birth of her son. She was married in 2023 to Thirupathi, a fellow software engineer from Ramnur village in Velgatoor mandal, and the couple has a one-year-old child.

According to police sources, Lakshmi’s parents had promised a dowry of ₹55 lakh at the time of marriage, of which ₹10 lakh was reportedly given upfront. The remaining amount was to be paid after selling family property. However, it is alleged that her in-laws began pressuring her for the balance, leading to frequent disputes and emotional trauma.

The couple had returned to Ramnur just six days ago when tensions reportedly escalated. On Thursday night, Lakshmi took the extreme step and left a chilling suicide note written on a mirror, stating, “Sorry Mummy & Daddy. I am not interested in living. Take care of my son. Do not give him to them (in-laws).

Police have registered a case against her husband and in-laws in the alleged harassment. Meanwhile, her grieving family has demanded strict action and justice for their daughter.

This tragic incident once again throws a spotlight on the persistent menace of dowry-related harassment, even among educated and working couples. Authorities have urged women facing abuse to seek help and not suffer in silence.
