Tension arose on Friday in Balmur mandal within the Achampet Constituency of Nagarkurnool district. The police detained several BJP leaders who had organized a protest to demand the completion of the BT road from Seetharamapuram to Thodelagadda.
For nearly two years, the road construction has been abandoned by the contractor, leaving it in poor condition. The rains have worsened the situation, washing away gravel and concrete, making the road unusable. This has caused significant problems for locals, including farmers, students, and daily commuters.
Despite numerous complaints to officials, no action was taken. This inaction led villagers and BJP members to protest, demanding the road work resume immediately.
The police, however, intervened by arresting the BJP leaders and protesters, claiming they were obstructing traffic. The protesters were taken to local police stations, effectively stopping the demonstration.
BJP leaders criticized the arrests, accusing the state government of suppressing democratic rights rather than addressing public concerns. They blamed the government’s failure to complete the road project and pledged to continue their protest until the issue was resolved for the people of Balmur mandal.
Villagers expressed frustration, noting that every rainy season isolates their villages due to the damaged road, disrupting transportation. They called on the government to restart the road work to end their suffering.
Police officials defended their actions, stating that the arrests were necessary to maintain peace and order.
