Wyra (Khammam): Farmers in the Khammam district are facing serious problems after unexpected rains soaked their harvested rice. Nelluri Koteswara Rao, president of the BJP Khammam district, warned that if the government doesn’t act quickly, farmers could face a bleak future.
On Thursday, Rao and other BJP leaders visited rice procurement centers and nearby fields in the Wyra mandal. They were upset by what they saw and strongly criticized the government’s lack of action.
Rao accused the government of turning its back on farmers. “Blaming ‘quality issues’ to avoid buying the soaked rice is heartless,” he said. “This rice is not just food—it’s the result of hard work. Ignoring it is like ignoring farmers’ lives.”
He added that the government had advance knowledge about the rains but still failed to make any protective arrangements. “This isn’t just carelessness—it’s a serious failure in responsibility,” Rao stated.
According to Rao, farmers are being forced to dry their soaked grain in open fields, risking further damage. He pointed out that although IKP centers were set up with much publicity, not a single bag of rice has been collected so far.
“How can rice be procured without assigning it to rice mills?” he questioned. “Opening centers without planning is just another way to mislead farmers.”
Rao demanded that the government immediately assign rice mills and begin purchasing the damaged crop. He accused the current administration of turning against the farming community.
“The government must stop making empty promises. It should act now and protect our farmers,” he warned. “If not, the BJP is ready to launch a strong movement to defend their rights.”
