New Delhi: India’s hosting of the BRICS National Security Advisers’ Meeting this week underscores the growing importance of the grouping in an increasingly fragmented global order. What began as an economic coalition of emerging markets is steadily evolving into a platform that addresses security, geopolitical and governance challenges facing the Global South.

Chaired by National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, the meeting brought together senior officials from BRICS member countries to deliberate on terrorism, cyber security, regional conflicts and the implications of emerging technologies. The discussions come at a time when global tensions remain high, with conflicts in West Asia, economic uncertainty and strategic competition among major powers reshaping international relations.

The BRICS grouping comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa and expanded in recent years to include new members such as Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates; now represents a significant share of the world’s population, economic output and energy resources. The expansion has strengthened the bloc’s claim of representing the interests of developing nations seeking greater influence in global decision-making.

For India, the meeting offers an opportunity to reinforce its position as a leading voice of the Global South while advancing cooperation on issues that directly affect national and regional security. New Delhi has consistently advocated reforms in international institutions, arguing that bodies such as the United Nations Security Council, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank should better reflect contemporary geopolitical realities.

Security cooperation has emerged as an increasingly important pillar of BRICS engagement. While economic collaboration remains central to the grouping’s agenda, member countries are now placing greater emphasis on counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, cyber resilience and the protection of critical infrastructure. These concerns have gained urgency as digital threats become more sophisticated and conflicts increasingly extend beyond conventional battlefields.

Analysts note that BRICS faces inherent challenges due to the diverse political systems, economic priorities and strategic interests of its members. Differences between some member states, including India and China, continue to test the group’s cohesion. Nevertheless, the bloc has managed to sustain cooperation by focusing on shared interests such as development, trade, technology and multipolarity.

India’s BRICS chairship comes at a time when many countries are seeking alternatives to traditional power structures dominated by Western institutions. The grouping’s emphasis on inclusive growth, development financing and equitable global governance resonates strongly across Asia, Africa and Latin America. Initiatives such as the New Development Bank have further enhanced BRICS’ appeal by providing an additional source of financing for infrastructure and sustainable development projects.

The significance of the New Delhi meeting extends beyond immediate security concerns. It signals BRICS’ ambition to play a larger role in shaping international discourse on peace, development and global governance. As geopolitical uncertainties continue to mount, the ability of emerging economies to coordinate their positions on critical issues may increasingly influence the future direction of international relations.
