Hyderabad: A political controversy is growing over 400 acres of land in Kanch Gachibowli. The Congress government is facing criticism from both the BJP and the BRS. Students from Hyderabad Central University are protesting against the government’s plan to auction the land, and both opposition parties are now supporting the students.
However, there’s a twist. When the BRS was in power, it had no issue selling government land. In fact, it auctioned more than 1,000 acres through the Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TSIIC) and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA). This earned the state over ₹30,000 crore. Some of the most valuable land in Hyderabad—such as in Raidurgam, Khanamet, Manikonda, and Narsingi—was sold by TSIIC. HMDA also sold land in areas like Kokapet, Rajendranagar, and Budvel. At one point, land in Kokapet sold for ₹100 crore per acre.
Now that the Congress government is planning its own land auctions, BRS leaders who once defended such actions are now opposing them. BJP leaders, who were quiet when BRS was selling land, are also protesting with the students now.
The Congress government says it wants to use the 400 acres to boost Hyderabad’s IT corridor. It plans to use the money from the land to support welfare programs, just like the BRS did in the past.
This situation has led many to ask: if selling land was okay before, why is it being criticized now? The issue has become a major part of the ongoing political struggle in Telangana.
