Hyderabad: The state government will decide on holding local body elections during the Cabinet meeting on August 30. This meeting will also set the agenda for the Assembly session starting the same day.
The State Election Commission is preparing to update the electoral rolls for all Gram Panchayats, indicating that elections could take place in September.
The Cabinet will address the issue of a 42% quota for Backward Classes in these elections. Two bills related to this quota have been with the President for three months.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy consulted legal experts in New Delhi to understand the implications of implementing the BC quota through a Government Order (GO) without a formal act. Concerns were raised about potential legal challenges from the opposition.
Revanth Reddy is seeking advice from Congress MP and legal expert Abhishek Singhvi on this matter. The government’s ability to enforce the BC quota depends on following legal procedures.
To gain political leverage in the elections, the Cabinet will also discuss presenting the PC Ghose Commission report on the Kaleshwaram project during the five-day Assembly session. The Chief Minister has hinted at taking action against those implicated in the mismanagement of this costly irrigation project.
