The BRS is at risk of losing support in the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) as many of its Corporators are considering joining the Congress. Seven of them have already joined the Congress, with one before the Assembly elections and the others recently.

However, it won’t be easy for the Congress. They need 34 Corporators to propose an impeachment motion, but they currently only have 11 out of the 66-member urban local body. The BRS still has 48 Corporators. The Congress hopes to gain more support by May.

Some BRS Corporators are determined to remove Mayor Gundu Sudharani from her position. This suggests that these Corporators may join the Congress or support her removal. However, Sudharani will remain in her post until at least the first week of May. According to the rule, it takes three years to propose a no-confidence motion against the Mayor.

Congress sources claim that many Corporators are in contact with the Konda couple – Muralidhar Rao and Minister for Forests, Environment and Endowments Konda Surekha (Warangal East MLA). It is expected that they will defect to the Congress sooner or later. Even before the Assembly elections, several Corporators met with the Konda couple to discuss their future considering the decline of BRS. Given this situation, it seems likely that more BRS Corporators will join the Congress.

“A number of Corporators are unhappy with the Mayor and her approach. We plan to propose a no-confidence motion in May 2024. By then, the Congress will have more support and things will settle down,” said a rebel BRS Corporator.
