Dr K Laxman, a Rajya Sabha MP and national president of OBC Morcha, believes that BCs need another freedom movement to gain power. He made this statement while speaking to a group of BC journalists, urging them to use social media to raise awareness.
Dr Laxman pointed out that despite most media outlets being controlled by upper castes, it is BC journalists who are doing the majority of the work. He referenced the Kaka Kalelkar Commission’s recommendation for reservations for BCs in the country.
While Nehru had previously stated that political reservations for BCs should not be based on caste, Dr Laxman praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for appointing 27 BCs as Union Ministers since coming to power in 2014. This, he believes, is a step in the right direction for BC empowerment.
