Hyderabad: The Durgabai Deshmukh Renova Cancer Centre in Vidyanagar has achieved a major medical milestone. The hospital successfully performed the first-ever Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) surgery in East Hyderabad. This surgery was done on a 52-year-old woman named Nayini Lalitha, from Mudigonda village in Khammam district. Lalitha was suffering from a rare cancer called Pseudomyxoma Peritonei, which affects only one in a million people. For the past four months, she had been struggling with symptoms like a swollen abdomen, difficulty breathing, loss of appetite, and weight loss.

Lalitha and her family consulted several hospitals in Khammam and Hyderabad. However, the treatment was costly due to the advanced stage of her disease. Eventually, they approached the Durgabai Deshmukh Renova Cancer Centre, where Dr. U. Azad Chandrashekhar, the Medical Director and Senior Surgical Oncologist, took on her case.

Dr. Chandrashekhar and his team carefully planned the HIPEC surgery. This type of surgery combines cytoreductive surgery (removal of tumors) with heated chemotherapy, which is delivered directly into the abdomen. The surgery lasted for 10-12 hours and involved several complex procedures, including Peritonectomy, Cholecystectomy, and Total Colectomy, among others.

Thanks to the skill of the medical team, Lalitha made a full recovery in just one week. The hospital’s post-operative care played a crucial role in her quick recovery. This success highlights the Durgabai Deshmukh Renova Cancer Centre’s commitment to offering advanced cancer treatments at affordable prices.

Dr. Chandrashekhar expressed his pride in the team’s achievement, stating, “We are incredibly proud to have successfully performed this complex HIPEC surgery, offering renewed hope for patients with rare and challenging cancers.” He also praised the hard work of the doctors, nurses, and staff, who ensured the best outcome for Lalitha.

Mr. Ravindranath Garaga, COO of Renova Group of Hospitals, emphasized that the hospital strives to provide cutting-edge medical care using the latest technology and international-standard treatment facilities. He said, “This achievement exemplifies our mission to make advanced healthcare accessible to everyone.”

The surgical team included Dr. Samanth, Consultant Anesthesiologist, and Dr. Ravikumar Reddy, Dr. Ullas, and Dr. Rakesh Kumar, all Consultant Surgical Oncologists. They expressed their pride in pioneering this surgery in East Hyderabad. The team also stressed the importance of early diagnosis and proper treatment in managing rare cancers like Pseudomyxoma Peritonei.

Lalitha’s family was deeply grateful to the medical team, especially Dr. Chandrashekhar, for their expertise and compassion during her treatment. They thanked the hospital for providing unwavering support throughout the challenging journey.

This groundbreaking surgery is a significant step forward in cancer care in East Hyderabad. It shows that the Durgabai Deshmukh Renova Cancer Centre is at the forefront of offering advanced and affordable treatments for all.
