Hyderabad: The Supreme Court has temporarily stopped any harsh actions against former SIB chief T Prabhakar Rao, a major suspect in the phone-tapping case. On Thursday, the court allowed Rao to have his passport back so he can return to India within three days. Rao had asked the court for protection from arrest in advance. Justices B V Nagaratna and Satish Chandra Sharma instructed Rao to meet with the investigation officer and ensured his passport is returned to him. They ordered the State government not to take any severe actions against him at this time.
Rao must promise to come back to India within three days once he receives his passport. During the court session, Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta and senior lawyer Sidharth Luthra strongly opposed Rao’s request for bail. It is believed that Rao is currently in the US. Authorities had issued a Red-Corner Notice against him, and his passport was canceled.
