Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), which recently became India’s largest municipal body, is likely to be trifurcated into three independent municipal corporations after the term of the current elected body ends on February 10. The move is aimed at improving governance and administrative efficiency in the rapidly expanding metropolitan region.
According to sources, the three proposed civic bodies are expected to be named Hyderabad Corporation, Cyberabad Corporation, and Malkajgiri Corporation. The restructuring will come into effect once the GHMC council’s tenure concludes.
Proposed Zonal Division
Out of the existing 12 zones under GHMC, the proposed Hyderabad Corporation is likely to include the largest share, covering six zones — Secunderabad, Khairatabad, Golconda, Charminar, Rajendranagar, and Shamshabad.
The proposed Cyberabad Corporation will comprise the western zones of Kukatpally, Quthbullapur, and Serilingampally. Sources indicated that the Cyberabad civic body may also be officially named the Serilingampally Corporation.
The eastern parts of the city — Malkajgiri, Uppal, and LB Nagar zones — are expected to fall under the newly formed Malkajgiri Corporation.
Administrative Setup After Trifurcation
Once the GHMC council’s term ends, the city’s administration is expected to be overseen by Special Chief Secretary Jayesh Ranjan, who handles metropolitan area and urban development under HMDA limits. He is likely to function as the Special Commissioner during the transition period.
Senior IAS officers are being considered to head the new corporations. The names of R.V. Karnan, GHMC Commissioner and a 2012-batch IAS officer, and G. Srijana, Additional Commissioner and a 2013-batch IAS officer, are under consideration to lead either the Hyderabad or Cyberabad corporation.
T. Vinay Krishna Reddy, a 2013-batch IAS officer, is expected to be appointed as the Commissioner of the Malkajgiri Corporation.
Proposed Head Offices
As per the proposal, the HMDA building at Tarnaka may function as the head office of the Malkajgiri Corporation. The National Academy of Construction (NAC) campus in Madhapur is being considered as the headquarters for the Cyberabad Corporation.
The existing GHMC head office at Lower Tank Bund will continue to serve as the headquarters of the Hyderabad Corporation.
What This Means for the City
Officials say the proposed trifurcation is intended to ensure better civic administration, faster decision-making, and improved service delivery across Hyderabad’s vast urban area. With population growth and rapid urban expansion, managing the city under a single municipal body had become increasingly complex.
Formal announcements and government orders regarding the trifurcation are expected once the current GHMC council completes its term.
