Hyderabad: The Endowments Department in Telangana plans to identify and restore old, historic temples that are in poor condition. They aim to involve the public and provide funding for these restorations. A committee of officers will soon be formed to assess these temples.
The government wants to revive the historical significance of these temples and make them accessible to devotees again. A senior official mentioned that a new committee will include members from the Endowments, Revenue, and Municipal Administration departments. Endowments Principal Secretary Shailaja Ramaiyyar is expected to lead this committee.
This committee will identify and list temples needing attention and propose plans to the government. For example, if a temple is in a remote area, the Panchayat Raj Department will ensure road access. The Roads and Buildings Department may assist in structural renovations.
Corporate companies might also be involved in the restoration efforts. The history and traditions of each temple will be shared with visitors, potentially boosting tourism.
The idea emerged after villagers raised over Rs 3 crore to restore the neglected 11th-century Panchakuta Shivalayam in Atmakur, Warangal district. This temple is known for fulfilling the wishes of couples desiring children.
Previously, the government had formed a committee to evaluate protected Endowment temples for restoration. The Director of Endowments had highlighted the need for urgent repairs on several significant temples in a letter to the government.
There are many philanthropists eager to help restore these temples. With government support and a clear list of temples, many historic sites can be preserved and renewed.
