Hyderabad: The play ‘1857: Turrebaz Khan‘ is set to be performed in Hyderabad on Saturday at 7 pm at the Taramati Baradari Indoor Auditorium. This event is organized by Telangana Tourism and HMDA in partnership with the Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Foundation.
Governor Jishnu Dev Verma will attend as the chief guest. The play tells the story of Turrebaz Khan, a 19th-century soldier from Hyderabad who bravely fought for India’s freedom during the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. Known for his courage, the play features live traditional Indian percussion.
The drama unfolds in a forest where Khan was captured and killed. It imagines his final hour spent with Qurban Ali, a captor and slave of the regime Khan opposed. Despite sharing the same origins, their paths diverged due to circumstances—one rebelled for a cause, while the other served the system for personal gain. The play’s gripping performances and strong script have been highly praised in Edinburgh and London, earning titles like ‘Highlight of the Festival’ and ‘A milestone in contemporary Indian theatre’. It showcases Hyderabad’s heroes globally, continuing the Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Foundation’s tradition of history-themed plays.
Masood Akhtar, a seasoned actor from Mumbai, plays Qurban Ali. Mohammad Ali Baig portrays Turrebaz Khan, remaining tied in ropes throughout. The production, by Begum Razia Baig, is written and directed by Padma Shri Mohammad Ali Baig.
