Hyderabad: Every year on June 2, Telangana celebrates its Formation Day, commemorating the creation of India’s 29th state in 2014. The formation of Telangana was the result of a long and historic struggle spanning several decades, involving students, employees, intellectuals, artists, journalists, political leaders and ordinary citizens who demanded a separate state for the Telangana region.

The Telangana movement is widely regarded as one of India’s longest democratic statehood struggles. The demand evolved through multiple phases, beginning in the late 1950s and eventually culminating in the creation of a separate state on June 2, 2014.

How Telangana Became Part of Andhra Pradesh

Before 1956, Telangana was part of the erstwhile Hyderabad State under the Nizam. Following India’s independence and the integration of Hyderabad State into the Indian Union in 1948, Telangana remained a separate administrative region.

In 1956, under the States Reorganisation Act, the Telugu-speaking Telangana region was merged with Andhra State to form Andhra Pradesh. The merger was carried out under the Gentlemen’s Agreement, which promised safeguards for Telangana’s interests in employment, education, administration and resource allocation.

Over time, many people in Telangana felt these safeguards were not being fully implemented, leading to growing dissatisfaction and demands for a separate state.

The 1969 Telangana Movement: Where the Statehood Struggle Gained Momentum

The first major Telangana agitation began in 1969. Although concerns had existed earlier, the movement gained strength when students and youth across Telangana started demanding implementation of safeguards promised during the merger.

Osmania University in Hyderabad became the epicenter of the movement. Student protests rapidly spread to other towns and districts, turning the agitation into a mass movement.

The movement witnessed:

  • Large-scale student protests
  • Public demonstrations
  • Government employee participation
  • Political mobilization
  • Police action and arrests

The 1969 agitation became one of the most significant regional movements in post-independence India and laid the foundation for future statehood demands.

Karimnagar’s Historic Role in the Telangana Movement

Karimnagar district played a crucial role throughout the Telangana movement and is often considered one of the strongest centers of Telangana political consciousness.

Several key events, public meetings and political mobilization programs were organized in Karimnagar over the decades.

Karimnagar became particularly important after the emergence of K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), who represented the region politically and transformed the statehood demand into a mass political movement.

Professor Jayashankar: The Ideological Architect of Telangana

No discussion about Telangana is complete without mentioning Professor Kothapalli Jayashankar.

Often referred to as the ideological architect of Telangana, Professor Jayashankar spent decades researching regional disparities and advocating for separate statehood.

His studies on employment, irrigation, resource allocation and regional development provided the intellectual foundation for the movement.

He remained one of the most respected voices of the Telangana cause until his death in 2011.

The Formation of TRS: A Turning Point

A major turning point came on April 27, 2001, when K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) founded the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS).

KCR resigned from his position as Deputy Speaker of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly and launched the party with a single objective—achieving statehood for Telangana.

The party was formally launched at Jaladrushyam in Hyderabad, which became one of the most significant landmarks in Telangana political history.

The first public meetings attracted thousands of supporters and transformed the Telangana issue into a structured political movement.

TRS later established its headquarters in Hyderabad and expanded rapidly across all Telangana districts.

The movement rapidly intensified and forced the issue onto the national political agenda.
