The Hyderabad Cyber Crime Unit has successfully dismantled a major network of illegal online betting and fake investment advertisements operating across social media platforms. During March, the unit identified and removed 129 social media profiles on Facebook and Instagram that were running 494 paid advertisements promoting unauthorized betting applications and fraudulent investment schemes targeting Indian users.

The fraudulent profiles employed sophisticated tactics to lure unsuspecting victims into their traps. These included false promises of easy money, attractive bonus offers, referral commissions, and even deepfake videos featuring celebrities to create an illusion of legitimacy. The advertisements were specifically designed to target users across India, with many focusing on residents of Telangana where online betting remains illegal.

Through continuous digital monitoring and cyber patrol efforts, authorities have been tracking these illegal operations systematically. All identified profiles promoting betting apps and investment scams have been reported to the respective social media platforms and successfully taken down. The swift action demonstrates the unit’s commitment to protecting citizens from digital financial fraud.

Under the ongoing cyber patrol initiative, the Hyderabad Cyber Crime Unit has achieved significant results. In total, authorities have removed 209 profiles and 746 advertisements linked to illegal betting and fraudulent investment activities. The scale of the operation highlights the extensive network of scammers operating through social media platforms to exploit vulnerable users.

Investigations are currently underway to trace the individuals and organized groups behind these illegal operations. The cyber crime team is working to identify the masterminds coordinating these fraudulent networks. Legal action will be initiated against those found responsible for running these scams once the investigation concludes.

The authorities have issued a public advisory emphasizing that online betting is illegal in Telangana and can result in significant financial losses and misuse of personal data. Citizens are urged to avoid downloading betting applications, promoting such platforms, or sharing referral links that could facilitate these illegal activities. The advisory specifically warns against the rising trend of deepfake celebrity endorsements used to deceive potential victims.

The cyber crime unit has cautioned the public to remain vigilant against fake high-return investment schemes that promise unrealistic profits. These schemes often use professional-looking advertisements and fake testimonials to appear legitimate. Citizens are advised to thoroughly verify any investment opportunity before committing their money and to be particularly suspicious of offers that seem too good to be true.

The public can report any suspicious online activity or fraudulent schemes to cybercrime authorities through the national helpline 1930 or by visiting the official cybercrime reporting portal. The authorities encourage citizens to stay alert, verify all investment opportunities through proper channels, and completely avoid engaging with unauthorized online betting or gaming platforms to protect themselves from financial fraud and legal consequences.
