Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has unveiled big plans to turn Hyderabad into a major data center hub. He announced the creation of a dedicated “data city”, aiming to attract tech investments and boost digital infrastructure.

The announcement came during a review meeting with the electricity department at the Command Control Center in Hyderabad on Friday. Officials updated the Chief Minister on the state’s rapidly growing power needs.

This year, Telangana’s electricity demand has surged to 17,162 megawatts (MW) — a 9.8% increase compared to last year. Projections show demand will climb to 18,138 MW by 2025-26, and could reach a massive 31,808 MW by 2034-35.

CM Revanth Reddy stressed the urgent need to prepare for this sharp rise. He pointed out that upcoming infra projects, including water supply systems, railways, metros, and other public transport services, will need a reliable power supply. He also noted that new industries and data centers will further push demand, especially in Greater Hyderabad and surrounding regions.

To handle this growth, the Chief Minister directed officials to upgrade existing power substations and improve infrastructure. He proposed installing underground power lines in emerging urban areas to eliminate unsightly poles and towers.

He also suggested implementing smart poles in key locations such as the Secretariat, Necklace Road, and KBR Park. These smart poles can support various services like lighting, surveillance, and communication.

In a push toward renewable energy, CM Reddy instructed teams to develop a plan for using solar power along the 160-kilometer Outer Ring Road. He also recommended exploring solar-powered solutions for footpaths and drainage systems within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area.

The initiatives aim to modernize Telangana’s energy systems while supporting the state’s rapid growth and digital transformation.
