Rangareddy: The Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH) in Hyderabad, along with its branches in Bengaluru and Bhubaneswar, has been granted “Deemed to be University” status by India’s Ministry of Education.
This recognition was officially announced in the Gazette of India on July 5, 2025, as per a release from IIPH Hyderabad.
The Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) celebrated this milestone, highlighting its significance for advancing public health education and research in the country.
Prof. K. Srinath Reddy, the Founding President of PHFI, expressed joy over this achievement. He noted that the new status allows for greater academic freedom and curriculum flexibility. This will align with national health initiatives like Ayushman Bharat and address specific regional health issues.
He stressed the need for a diverse public health workforce in India, including researchers, policy advocates, and community experts.
The new university status will enable the IIPHs to create specialized academic programs. These will focus on India’s health challenges, such as communicable and non-communicable diseases, pandemic readiness, and care for the elderly.
In a related move, the Telangana government is revamping health care in the state. The Rangareddy district is recruiting Medical Officers for various Upper Primary Health Centers (UPHCs) under the National Urban Health Mission (NUHM).
The district’s Medical & Health Officer has opened applications for 21 Medical Officer positions. These are contract roles for one year.
Applications are accepted both in person and online from July 11 to July 18. After this period, the applications will be reviewed at the Collectorate Rangareddy for candidate selection, according to Mallikarjun, a Senior Assistant at the District Medical & Health Office.
