Hyderabad: The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) is excited to share that its Director, Prof. B. S. Murty, has been chosen as the President of the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM). This esteemed organization represents experts in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from academic, industrial, and research fields. The announcement was made at the 79th Annual General Meeting of IIM in Kolkata. Prof. Murty will start his new role on August 1, 2025.

Prof. Murty takes over from Sajjan Jindal, the head of JSW Group, who was the previous President. Prof. Murty aims to advance IIM’s scientific and technological influence. During the AGM, he highlighted his plans to maintain the organization’s strong heritage while pushing its goals further.

He plans to engage more with young professionals and create platforms for sharing knowledge and collaborating across sectors. “Building stronger links between IIM and industry, academia, research bodies, and professional organizations, both locally and globally, is a top priority,” he said.

Prof. Murty has over 40 years of experience in his field. He started with a Diploma in Metallurgy in 1983, completed his Bachelor’s in Engineering at VRCE Nagpur, and earned his Master’s and PhD from IISc Bangalore. He has held key roles at IIT Kharagpur and IIT Madras. Since 2019, he has been the Director of IIT Hyderabad, now serving his second term until 2030.

Known worldwide for his work in non-equilibrium materials and high entropy alloys, Prof. Murty has published over 500 papers, supervised 56 PhD students, and completed 75 projects worth Rs 200 crore. He holds more than 15 patents and has received awards like the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award, the National Metallurgist Award, an honorary doctorate from Deakin University, and several lifetime achievement awards. He is a Fellow of three Indian science academies and the World Academy of Sciences.

Established in 1946 with 42 members, the Indian Institute of Metals has grown to include over 10,000 professionals. Under Prof. Murty’s leadership, IIM is set to enhance India’s role in metallurgy, materials science, and manufacturing technologies.
