Dr. B.S. Murthy, Director of IIT Hyderabad, recently gave a talk on “Popular Science and Innovation in Technology” at GITAM University in Hyderabad. The event celebrated the 167th birth anniversary of Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose, a famous scientist known for advancements in plant science.
Dr. Murthy praised J.C. Bose for his wide-ranging innovations, which included contributions to microwaves and early telecommunications. He encouraged students to learn from Bose’s example, saying innovation crosses all fields. “Remember J.C. Bose as an innovator without boundaries,” he stated.
Discussing India’s future, Dr. Murthy mentioned Viksit Bharat and Atmanirbhar Bharat, initiatives by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said India’s goal to be a developed nation relies on boosting its technology and products. Although India excels in basic research, missile technology, and atomic energy, Dr. Murthy emphasized the need to advance in all areas to reduce imports and strengthen self-reliance.
At IIT Hyderabad, the academic approach is flexible and innovation-focused. Dr. Murthy described their six-module semester system. It allows first-year students to take micro-credit courses in various fields. The Engineering Science program also offers a customizable curriculum, letting students shape their education.
Dr. Murthy highlighted the IITH Technology Innovation Park (TIP), open to students all over India. Through TIP, students can access mentorship, funding, research support, and accommodation. IITH also offers 560 advanced research facilities through the Open to All Technologies (OAT) initiative, and 20 online courses for all ages.
He encouraged students to aim high, stating, “You are what you think you are.” Resources, he noted, follow big dreams, and working across disciplines leads to impactful innovation. Dr. Murthy introduced BHARATI—Bold Hearted Aspirants Rising to Transform India—a new initiative for first-year B.Tech students. Plans for an Inter-IIT Undergraduate Innovation Meet were also shared. IITH aims to support young innovators with funding, mentorship, and innovation spaces.
During the event, Prof. D.S. Rao, Pro Vice-Chancellor, GITAM Hyderabad; Dr. Srivari Chandrasekhar; and Prof. B.V.R. Tata, Distinguished Professors at GITAM, honored Dr. Murthy with a shawl and memento. The program was organized by Dr. G. Niharika and supervised by Dr. M. Reza.
Students from various colleges, including Loyola Academy, Sai Sudhir Degree College, and St. Anthony Degree College, along with those from GITAM, attended the lecture.
