Traffic congestion in Hyderabad’s IT corridors has reached alarming levels, with commuters now comparing it unfavorably to Bengaluru, a city long notorious for traffic jams. Traveling even four to five kilometers in these tech hubs is taking upwards of an hour, causing severe frustration among daily commuters and IT employees. The worsening situation has prompted authorities to take immediate action to address the gridlock that has become a daily nightmare for thousands of workers.
To combat the escalating traffic crisis, Hyderabad police are preparing a special operation in collaboration with IT companies. The initiative aims to implement systematic changes during peak hours to reduce the burden on major roads. Among the proposed measures are encouraging IT employees to adopt flexible shift timings, promoting office caravans, and implementing carpooling policies to reduce the number of vehicles on the road during rush hours.
Authorities have identified that cabs and autos stopping directly in front of IT company gates are a major contributor to traffic stalling on main roads. In response, police have ordered that pick-up, drop-off, and parking facilities must be made mandatory inside IT campuses. This move is expected to prevent vehicles from blocking main thoroughfares and ensure smoother traffic flow outside the tech parks.
To further systematize vehicle movement outside IT parks, authorities plan to deploy trained security staff as traffic marshals. These marshals will be responsible for managing traffic flow and ensuring that vehicles move in an orderly manner during peak hours. The measure is part of a broader strategy to bring discipline to the chaotic traffic situation that has plagued the IT corridors.
Despite these initiatives, commuters and drivers have pointed out several ground-level issues that continue to hamper traffic movement. Vehicles parked perpendicular to roads during peak times significantly slow down traffic flow. Share autos frequently stop abruptly wherever they please to pick up passengers, creating bottlenecks. Additionally, U-turns remain chaotic with no proper management, and perhaps most critically, potholes on the roads are forcing vehicles to slow down considerably.
Vehicle drivers have expressed that addressing these fundamental infrastructure and enforcement issues should be the first priority. According to their assessment, fixing road conditions, regulating auto stops, and managing U-turn traffic would have an immediate and significant impact on improving traffic speed and reducing congestion in the IT corridors.
