Khanapur: Farmers in Kadem mandal of Nirmal district held a protest on Wednesday, worried that the supply of irrigation water from the Sadar Mat Aya Katta canal might stop before they finish harvesting their rabi crops.
The farmers feared that if they started growing a second crop without enough water, they would suffer heavy losses. To raise their concerns, they staged a dharna (protest) on the Lachanna Yellapur–Nirmal–Mancherial Road, stopping traffic in the area.
Hundreds of farmers from several villages, including Lingapura, Sarangapur, Yellapur, Masaipet, Yelagadapa, Nachaanillapur, Mallannapet, Pata Maddipadaga, Kotha Maddipadaga, Peddur Thanda, Chityala, and Vakeel Nagar, joined the protest.
Kadam Tahsildar Prabhakar and Sub-Inspector Krishna Sagar Reddy tried to convince the farmers to end the protest, as it was affecting road traffic. When the farmers refused, local MLA Vedama Bojju Patel spoke to them over the phone and promised that irrigation water would be supplied until the harvest is completed.
After receiving this assurance, the farmers decided to call off their protest.
