Hyderabad: KT Rama Rao, the BRS Working President, urged the Chief Minister and the A Revanth Reddy government to quickly fulfill the commitments made to gig and platform workers outlined in the Abhayahastam Declaration.
Rama Rao criticized the Congress party for neglecting gig workers after promising support during the election. Members of the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) met him at Telangana Bhavan and expressed their struggles. They revealed that despite Congress’s promises, nothing has been done. Rama Rao assured them of BRS’s support and committed to pressing the government until their issues are addressed.
He called for the immediate creation of the Gig Workers Welfare Board, provision of social security, fair wages, and compensation for deceased workers as promised by Congress. He reminded Rahul Gandhi of his commitment to these promises and urged him to act on the gig workers’ problems.
Rama Rao expressed concern over the families of gig workers Ahmed Bin Abdul Quder, Sham Sunder, and Lokurthi Naresh, who died but haven’t received the promised Rs 5 lakh insurance compensation despite submitting all documents. He criticized Congress for failing gig workers who served the public during crises like the Covid pandemic.
He demanded the immediate payment of Rs 5 lakh to the deceased workers’ families and the establishment of the Gig Workers Welfare Board. He also promised that the BRS party would support any special law for the welfare of gig workers.
Rama Rao accused Congress of making empty promises for votes and called for genuine action. He emphasized that gig workers’ welfare should not be just a promise but a responsibility of the government to ensure their security, dignity, and rights.
