Empowering Rural Artisans in Telangana: KVIC Distributes Electric Potter Wheels
In a significant move to support rural artisans and promote self-reliance, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) organized an event in Muchintal village, Shamshabad Mandal, Ranga Reddy district, Telangana. This event aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, which aims to make India self-sufficient.
During the event, Manoj Kumar, the chairman of KVIC, distributed electric potter wheels and training certificates to 300 potters. He emphasized that rural artisans play a crucial role in the Atmanirbhar and Viksit Bharat campaigns, which focus on building a self-reliant and developed India.
Manoj Kumar spoke about the success of the Gramodyog Vikas Yojana in Telangana. Over the last three years, KVIC has trained 1,240 artisans and provided 2,084 toolkits across various sectors. These sectors include leaf plate making, tamarind processing, honey production, footwear manufacturing, crafts from turnwood and wastewood, and services like electrician and plumbing. The initiative has greatly improved employment opportunities and income for rural youth, women, and artisans in the state.
He also highlighted the impact of the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) on job creation. Under this scheme, KVIC in Telangana has set up 17,622 new units, creating jobs for 160,178 people. Since Telangana’s formation, KVIC has provided Rs 639.97 crore as a Margin Money subsidy, contributing significantly to the state’s economic growth.
Manoj Kumar passionately spoke about Khadi’s importance, calling it the “soul of Atmanirbhar Bharat” and a foundation of rural India’s economy. He noted that Khadi and Village Industries products have seen a significant increase in sales. From Rs 31,154.20 crore in the financial year 2013-14, sales have grown fivefold to Rs 1,55,673.12 crore in 2023-24. This is the first time in independent India’s history that the turnover of Khadi and Village Industries has surpassed Rs 1.55 lakh crore, creating over 10.17 lakh new jobs.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from local artisans, citizens, and officials from both KVIC and the state government.
