Hyderabad: The distribution of “JammiChettu” saplings was started this Dussehra. The JammiChettu tree is the state tree of Telangana and is important both spiritually and culturally. During the Dasara festival, people pray to this tree and perform rituals. They also exchange Jammi leaves as a way to wish each other good health and happiness.
The Green India Challenge, led by founder J. Santosh Kumar, began this initiative to protect the JammiChettu tree, as its numbers have been reducing. Priests from the Swarnagiri Temple in Bhongir also joined in launching the program.
Under the slogan “OuruOuru ko JammiChettu – GudiGudi ko JammiChettu,” a total of 10,000 JammiChettu saplings will be given out. These saplings will be distributed to temples in villages and towns across Telangana as part of the Green India Challenge’s efforts to preserve the tree.
