Hyderabad: The Parakh Rashtriya Sarvekshan 2024 report by the Central Government highlights major issues with student learning in Telangana. It shows 75% of Class IX students can’t grasp basic percentage concepts for simple problems.
Originally the National Achievement Survey (NAS), this report points to big learning gaps in many subjects and grades. In Class IX, 69% of students struggle with understanding basic numerical sets like whole numbers and fractions. This indicates problems in teaching math.
The issue starts early. In Class VI, 54% can’t recognize simple number patterns. In Class III, over half find basic number ordering hard. Specifically, 52% can’t sequence numbers up to 99, and 49% struggle with simple addition and subtraction.
Math isn’t the only problem. In science, 69% of Class IX students fail to explain natural processes like climate and soil formation. Language skills are also lacking; 46% can’t identify main ideas in texts.
Telangana’s Class IX students score below the national average in most subjects. Their math score is 36%, science is 39%, and social science is 38%, all lower than national averages of 37%, 40%, and 40%. However, they match the national average of 54% in language skills.
Class VI students also show weak language skills. Nearly half (48%) can’t use strategies to understand texts, and 42% can’t grasp main ideas or make conclusions.
Overall, Telangana’s Class VI students perform below national averages. In language, math, and “The World Around Us,” scores are 53%, 44%, and 44%, trailing national averages by 4%, 2%, and 5%.
These findings highlight the urgent need to improve basic learning and apply education reforms effectively to close learning gaps in the state. The report questions the success of the state’s Foundational Literacy and Numeracy Mission and Learning Improvement Programs.
