Hyderabad—Around 6,000 years ago, Telangana produced some of the finest steel globally. This steel was highly sought after and exported to various countries. It played a crucial role in making top-quality knives in Damascus. These insights are from the book Wootz, The Forgotten Metal Craft of Deccan, launched by S Madhusudhana Chary, the Leader of Opposition in Council, on Thursday.
The book highlights that Damascus was renowned for crafting the best knives worldwide. However, the steel used for these knives was sourced from Telangana. The steel was so valuable that it was traded for ten gold nuggets per piece by Telangana manufacturers. This ancient steel industry positioned Telangana as a leader in global exports.
Dr. Sriperambudur Jaikishan authored the book, which debuted at an event in the Telugu University Auditorium in Nampally. The function was organized by the National Vishwakarma Employees and Professionals Association, led by A Padma Chary, the National President.
Madhusudhana Chary emphasized that the book, backed by evidence, would be a significant research resource. It showcases Telangana’s rich cultural and historical legacy in producing premium steel.
