Nineteen opposition parties, including Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), will boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament building in Delhi on May 28 at 12 p.m. The reason for the boycott is that President Droupadi Murmu was not invited. The new building has 888 seats for Lok Sabha and 384 seats for Rajya Sabha. It has spacious seats and modern amenities.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah urged against politicizing the inauguration ceremony and described it as an emotional process to unite modern India with ancient traditions. However, the opposition parties issued a statement announcing their intention to boycott the ceremony, stating that the President should be the one to open the new building.
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri reminded everyone of how Congress Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi inaugurated the library and Parliament annexe in the past. He questioned why the ruling party cannot inaugurate the new building now if Congress could inaugurate the previous buildings.
