Hyderabad: A 17-year-old girl named Blessy Goud received a crucial liver transplant at Osmania General Hospital (OGH). This operation was performed under the ‘Super Urgent Category’ of the Jeevan Daan program, marking a first for a government hospital in India to assist a financially disadvantaged patient this way.
Blessy, from Film Nagar, arrived at OGH in severe condition on May 12, 2025. She was suffering from Acute Fulminant Liver Failure and was in a deep coma due to Grade 4 Hepatic Encephalopathy. Previously, she had been treated at a private hospital but was moved to OGH because her family couldn’t afford the costs as her health continued to deteriorate.
Doctors at OGH noted Blessy had severe jaundice and no prior liver issues. She needed an urgent liver transplant within 48 hours to survive. The family had no suitable donor as Blessy, from a single-parent household, had no siblings. Her mother, a tailor, was also unwell. Dr. CH Madhusudhan, head of the Surgical Gastroenterology Department, explained that getting a liver from the elective list usually takes time because of long waiting lists, and there was no immediate liver dialysis option for her acute condition.
Dr. Madhusudhan highlighted the operation’s significance as the first emergency liver transplant for Acute Fulminant Liver Failure under the super urgent category in a government hospital. The surgery, lasting 20 hours, was challenging but successful, thanks to Jeevan Daan. Within 24 hours, they received a liver from a brain-dead donor in a private hospital. The transplant took place on May 14, 2025, and Blessy made a remarkable recovery. She was discharged in good health after two weeks and is now attending her B Tech first-year exams.
