Hyderabad: Crackdown on Sale of Banned Chinese Manja

After The Hans India highlighted the issue of banned Chinese manja flooding kite markets in a story titled “Deadly strings that govt fails to snap,” the Hyderabad police took swift action. On Saturday, December 28, the police raided several kite shops in Mangalhat, leading to the registration of 18 cases and the arrest of 22 individuals for selling the prohibited string.

During the raids, the police seized a total of 1,094 bobbins of Chinese manja. These strings, made from synthetic and non-biodegradable materials, are known to pose serious risks to both humans and animals.

The police issued strict warnings to kite shop owners, instructing them not to sell the banned manja. They also emphasized that failing to comply with these orders would result in severe consequences.

“We have conducted several awareness meetings with local residents and customers who buy manja,” said K. Venkata Reddy, ACP of Goshamahal. “We explained the precautions they should take while flying kites. For instance, kite flying should only be done from buildings with proper compound walls or railings to prevent accidents.”

Additionally, customers were cautioned not to purchase the banned Chinese manja. ACP Reddy made it clear that anyone found violating these rules would face legal action.

The police continue to focus on ensuring public safety during the kite-flying season and have urged everyone to follow the guidelines to avoid harm or penalty.
