Adilabad – Cybercriminals are finding new ways to trick people, warned Superintendent of Police Akhil Mahajan during a press briefing on Saturday.
He explained that dangerous files called APK files, often shared through social media, Telegram, and WhatsApp, give hackers control over victims’ phones. He urged everyone to stay alert and act fast if scammed. “If you fall prey to a cyber scam, call the National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930 or visit the cybercrime website right away,” he advised.
In just one week, police in Adilabad district received 15 cyber fraud complaints. These include scams related to online investments, fake loans, UPI payments, malicious APK files, fraud websites, and fake stock trading platforms.
SP Mahajan explained how these scams work. For example, some fake investment websites show big profits to lure people, even though the real money isn’t there.
In one case, a person living in the Adilabad 1-Town area got a message on Telegram. The scammer promised easy money through ratings and investment tasks shared on WhatsApp. Trusting the offer, the victim sent ₹40,000 using UPI. Soon after, the scammer vanished.
In another incident, a man from Jainath Mandal was tricked through a video call. Claiming to represent Mudra Finance, the fraudster asked for an upfront fee to process a loan. The victim ended up losing ₹22,150.
The police urge the public to be extra cautious online. Don’t click on unknown links, download suspicious files, or share personal information with strangers. Staying alert is the best way to stop cyber fraud before it happens.
