Rescue Operations Face Major Challenges
Hyderabad: Efforts to rescue eight people trapped in the collapsed Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel are proving extremely difficult. Despite the involvement of multiple expert teams, no major breakthrough has been achieved so far.
Specialists from ten agencies, including the Indian Army, Navy’s MARCOS, NDRF, SDRF, GSI, Rat Miners, and Singareni Collieries, have been working around the clock. However, thick mud, tangled iron rods, and concrete blocks are making the operation even harder. These obstacles have severely slowed down the rescue process.
Safety Concerns and Possible Causes
Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy has expressed concerns about the safety of the rescue teams. He pointed out that the continuous inflow of silt and water into the tunnel is making the operation dangerous. Experts believe this is one of the most difficult rescue missions in India, as the tunnel has only one entry and exit point.
The minister suggested that the collapse might have been caused by a minor tectonic shift or a failure in geological fault lines. “The high-speed inflow of silt and water is a major challenge. We are consulting top experts to find the best solution,” he said.
No Contact Yet With Trapped Individuals
Reddy provided updates on the situation, stating that rescue personnel are working tirelessly. Experts are analyzing videos and images from inside the tunnel to decide the next steps. Although oxygen is being pumped in continuously, there has been no contact with the trapped individuals.
The state government remains fully committed to the mission, using the best expertise from both India and abroad to increase the chances of a successful rescue.
Political Reactions and Government Response
The BRS party criticized Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for not visiting the site. However, Uttam Reddy dismissed these remarks as “disgraceful politics.” He pointed out that similar past incidents, such as the Srisailam Left Bank Power Plant fire and the Kaleshwaram Project accident, did not receive the same level of criticism.
Despite the challenges, rescue teams continue their determined efforts, while authorities explore all possible ways to save the trapped individuals.
