Hyderabad: Residents of Nizampet and Gopanpally are worried about the worsening condition of Pragathi Nagar Lake and Gopanpally Lake. They say the lakes are being polluted by people dumping garbage and untreated sewage directly into the water. This pollution is harming fish and other aquatic life.

These two lakes were once home to many bird species. Now, they are surrounded by mosquitoes, pigs, and stray dogs. The areas around the lakes have turned into dumping grounds. Near Pragathi Nagar Lake, butchers are throwing meat waste into the water, causing a strong bad smell.

At Gopanpally Lake, the situation is just as bad. Residents say untreated sewage from a nearby treatment plant is being released into the lake. This has led to fish dying and the water turning green and foul-smelling. People living nearby are suffering, with sleepless nights due to the stench and mosquito problems.

Social activist Sai Teja shared that food waste and even fecal matter are being dumped into the lake, especially at night. He said that even though locals have complained many times to the authorities, no action has been taken. Last month, the Irrigation Department gave written instructions to the Tashildar, but nothing has changed. Sai Teja urged the concerned departments to take responsibility and act quickly to clean up the lakes.
