Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy recently praised Rahul Gandhi for his push to hold a national Caste Census during the #BharatJodoYatra. Reddy credited Gandhi’s leadership for inspiring important steps toward social justice.
Reddy highlighted that Telangana became the first state in independent India to conduct a full caste survey. The last official caste-based census was done by the British in 1931.
The recent social, economic, and caste survey in Telangana showed that 56.32% of the state’s population belongs to Backward Classes. Taking this data into account, the Telangana Legislative Assembly proposed 42% reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in areas like education, government jobs, and politics.
Reddy said the Indian National Congress (INC) in Telangana has been at the forefront of demanding a national caste census. The party even held protests at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, calling on the central government to act.
He proudly declared, “What Telangana does today, India will follow tomorrow.” He also credited Rahul Gandhi’s vision for influencing national policy, even from the opposition.
In a major step forward, the central government has now agreed to include caste data in the next national census. Reddy congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Cabinet for this decision, saying it could lead to greater social justice and fairer representation across the country.
