Dr. Manikyala Chennaiah, who is the district president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in Nagarkurnool, expressed his deep concern about a recent horrific incident in Kolkata. A woman doctor was brutally raped and murdered by a hospital staff member. The attacker was under the influence of alcohol and was watching inappropriate content when he assaulted the doctor during her night duty. Dr. Chennaiah criticized the police for not arresting the accused yet, saying that this situation reflects poorly on society.
He emphasized that doctors, especially women doctors who provide free medical services to the poor and middle class, should not be subjected to such terrible acts. In response to the incident, the IMA has called for a nationwide 24-hour suspension of OPD services. Government hospitals will stop medical services for two hours, while private hospitals will halt services for an entire day.
Dr. Chennaiah also pointed out that the accused is reportedly the son of a powerful political figure. He believes this is why the police have been reluctant to take action. He demanded the arrest and punishment of the accused, regardless of their social or political connections.
Various medical associations, including the Government Doctors Association, Junior Doctors Association, Staff Nurses Association, Lab Technicians Association, and others, organized a large rally. The rally began at Ambedkar’s statue and called for the immediate hanging of the accused. The groups also submitted a memorandum to the government, urging the implementation of strict laws like Disha and Nirbhaya to protect doctors from such attacks.
Dr. Chennaiah warned that if the accused is not arrested within 24 hours, the IMA would plan larger protests and suspend medical services across the country. He called on both central and state governments to act quickly and ensure justice is served.
The protest saw the participation of many leaders and members from the medical community. Notable participants included Telangana IMA district president Dr. Manikyala Chennaiah, Dr. Rajesh Reddy from the Government Doctors Association, Dr. Narahari, Dr. Ramesh Chandra, Dr. Rajesh Goud, Professor Dr. Supriya, JUDAs leader Srividya, Dr. Shivani, and other medical staff and association members.
